LONDON, Dec 1 (Reuters) - Co-writing, directing, producing and starring in his Leonard Bernstein biopic "Maestro" was a terrifying undertaking for Bradley Cooper that turned into a journey of joy and courage. A passion project years in the making, "Maestro" is the follow up to Cooper's directorial debut, "A Star Is Born". Bernstein, who died in 1990, was a celebrated U.S. conductor and composer, who wrote classical music and iconic hit musicals like "West Side Story". "Maestro" focuses on his relationship with his wife, Felicia Montealegre, played by British actor Carey Mulligan, and on his bisexuality. “Maestro” was made for their family, said Cooper, and everything else, including Oscar talk, is extra.

CNN —In hindsight, Bradley Cooper’s directorial debut “A Star is Born” served as the commercial tune-up that paved the way for “Maestro,” as both films deal with the price of art as well as loving an artist. Before getting to the movie itself, a word about the controversy it triggered over the prosthetic nose that Cooper donned to better resemble his Jewish character. Carey Mulligan and Bradley Cooper in "Maestro," which Cooper also directed. Still, watching Cooper and Mulligan portray their characters across decades, it’s hard not to be impressed, while nurturing a greater appreciation for why Cooper found Bernstein’s contributions and complications deserving of such a tribute. Cooper and Mulligan’s work should be very much in those conversations, if not the movie itself.

LONDON, Nov 15 (Reuters) - Writer, director and actor Emerald Fennell follows up her Oscar-winning feature debut "Promising Young Woman" with a starry satirical thriller, "Saltburn". Oliver's status and confidence are given a boost when Felix invites him to spend the summer at Saltburn, his family's sprawling countryside estate. "Promising Young Woman", which earned Fennell a best original screenplay Oscar, came out in 2020 and its release during the COVID pandemic helped ease some of the sophomore film pressure, Fennell said. Fennell, whose acting credits include "Barbie" and "The Crown", said she spent years writing the script in her head, revisiting the characters and the locations. The star of her debut film, Carey Mulligan, also makes an appearance in "Saltburn", alongside Rosamund Pike and Richard E. Grant, who play Felix's parents.

Hollywood jumped into planning mode Thursday at the news of a tentative agreement between striking actors and the major entertainment companies. Just hours after the tentative agreement was announced, “The Marvels” star Iman Vellani was already being offered to press for interviews. The Walt Disney Co. movie, which cost over $200 million to produce, opens this weekend with showtimes starting as early as Thursday afternoon. Searchlight Pictures also started actively planning things for Michael Fassbender, who stars in Taika Waititi's “Next Goal Wins,” out next week. Brunson’s writing team had already been back in the room, but the strike’s suspension clears the way for filming.

NEW YORK (AP) — The fallout from the actors strike, now past 100 days, has been widespread throughout the film industry. As the strike pushes into Hollywood’s awards season, it’s increasingly muting the reception for some of the best performances of the year. The press room at the Venice Film Festival has to be the most beautiful film festival press room in the world. On a clear day — which it almost always is — you imagine that, were it not for the curvature of the earth, you could see forever. Or at least to Croatia. Some of these men were towering real-life figures. In both these cases — and arguably to the detriment of both well-made but strangely evanescent films — the portrayal of genius pales in comparison to the portrait of a woman who supported and nurtured that genius, even when it threatened to engulf her.

REUTERS/Mario Anzuoni Acquire Licensing RightsVENICE, Sept 2 (Reuters) - The make-up artist for Bradley Cooper's Leonard Bernstein biopic "Maestro" apologised on Saturday for offending people by giving the lead character a prosthetic nose, but said he only wanted authenticity. When the first trailer of the film surfaced last month, some critics complained that the nose pandered to Jewish stereotypes. Bernstein died in 1990 but his adult children have defended the make-up in the film, saying their father had had a "nice, big nose". But his make-up designer Kazu Hiro met the press and said he was surprised by the nose criticism. It is one of 23 movies competing for the Golden Lion award at the Venice Film Festival, which runs until Sept. 9.

CNN —Bradley Cooper and Helen Mirren have very different resumes, but they have landed in similar controversies with their latest movies, illustrating shifting standards and sensitivities about actors donning prosthetics to play Jewish characters. The first wave of that discussion came in response to images of Cooper’s makeup to resemble Leonard Bernstein for the upcoming biography “Maestro.” Mirren has drawn more attention in the UK for playing Golda Meir in the historical drama “Golda,” which opens this week. More recently, the debate has often shifted beyond racial and ethnic distinctions to other sources of sensitivity, such as Brendan Fraser wearing a fat suit to star in “The Whale.”Helen Mirren as Israeli prime minister Golda Meir in the movie "Golda." Carey Mulligan as Felicia Montealegre and Bradley Cooper as Leonard Bernstein in "Maestro." “Maestro” is scheduled for limited theatrical release in November and Netflix in December after premiering at the Venice International Film Festival.

We’re looking back at the strongest, smartest opinion takes of the week from CNN and other outlets. CNN —Arguably the least interesting thing about Leonard Bernstein — the legendary conductor and composer now being played by Bradley Cooper in an upcoming Netflix biopic called “Maestro”— was his nose. However, any non-Jewish person putting on a fake nose in order to portray a Jew is colliding with a grim history. I think we can and must discern between Cooper’s nose prosthesis and, for example, the virulent antisemitism embedded in the works of beloved children’s author Roald Dahl. I don’t want to watch “Maestro.” I don’t really care whether you do, so long as you respect my feelings. You cannot have a non-Jewish actor putting on a fake nose in order to play a Jew and not at least pause for a moment to consider the history.

Leonard Bernstein’s three children came to the defense of the actor and director Bradley Cooper on Wednesday after he drew fresh criticism for wearing a large prosthetic nose in his portrayal of the midcentury American composer and conductor, who was Jewish, in the forthcoming movie “Maestro.”When the makeup was first revealed last year, some questioned the decision by Cooper, who is not Jewish, to play Bernstein, who died in 1990. In the Netflix film, he stars opposite Carey Mulligan as Bernstein’s wife, Felicia Montealegre Bernstein. The debut of a teaser trailer on Tuesday prompted further discussion on social media about both the prosthesis, which critics said played into an antisemitic trope, and about whether an actor who is Jewish should instead have been cast to play Bernstein, the “West Side Story” composer and music director of the New York Philharmonic.

After Mr. Bernstein’s death in 1990 (Mrs. Bernstein died in 1978), the three children inherited the property. As when their parents were alive, the compound is a gathering spot for birthdays and holidays, and for fiercely contested rounds of Anagrams. Lately, it has also served as a set for the upcoming film “Maestro,” a portrait of the Bernsteins’ complicated marriage directed by and starring Bradley Cooper. “He wanted an authenticity about how he was evoking our dad and his world,” Ms. Bernstein said of Mr. Cooper. “He was very curious to come up here and visit, and that’s when he decided he wanted to come back and shoot in and around the house.

What people do to their bodies is their own business, but the ubiquity of injections, fillers and surgery in Hollywood creates a trickle-down problem. The longer you stare at your own face, the more you see how you don’t look like your favorite actor — or influencer. In another catch-22, stars also risk backlash if they do get cosmetic surgery — or if fans believe they have. Bullock, like Kidman, has previously denied getting plastic surgery (although she has talked about using something called Epidermal Growth Factor). Steroids have the same pernicious impact in Hollywood as cosmetic surgery, artificially elevating physical expectations and increasing peer pressure to keep up with the new standards.

The ceremony, which was not broadcast last January over controversy surrounding the HFPA, will return to NBC on Jan. 10.
‘She Said’ Review: Plodding Through the Weinstein Story
  + stars: | 2022-11-18 | by ( Kyle Smith | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: +1 min
Major movie studios hardly ever delve into newspaper work any more, and the so-so picture “She Said” is an excellent illustration of why. It falls into nearly every trap that awaits a journalism film, even featuring sequences in which characters type or stand around gazing into computer monitors, both of which exert considerable deflationary pull on drama. Since watching people ask questions leaves viewers at one remove from the story, the solution to the possibility of dramatic deficiency is either to make the journalists themselves abundantly colorful (“His Girl Friday,” “The Paper”) or to cast them as detectives who devise enterprising means to solve a complex puzzle (“All the President’s Men,” “Spotlight”). “She Said,” directed by the German actress and filmmaker Maria Schrader , errs by ignoring both paths. Portraying the New York Times reporters Megan Twohey and Jodi Kantor , who in 2017 broke the story about producer Harvey Weinstein ’s sexual misconduct, Carey Mulligan and Zoe Kazan are so aggressively ordinary that they leave a personality void at the center of this disappointing film.
“She Said” nevertheless joins a long tradition of movies about dogged reporters exposing injustice, and in this case helping spawn a sweeping movement. The film is adapted from the book by New York Times reporters Megan Twohey and Jodi Kantor, which might explain why the work of Ronan Farrow is mentioned but conspicuously shortchanged. Setting that aside, the heart of “She Said,” which begins with Twohey (Carey Mulligan) reporting on Donald Trump, centers on her collaboration with Kantor (Zoe Kazan) to lay bare the predatory behavior of Harvey Weinstein. Carey Mulligan and Zoe Kazan play New York Times reporters in the fact-based movie "She Said." (The film’s producers include Brad Pitt, who has spoken of confronting Weinstein back when he was dating Gwyneth Paltrow.)

CNN —“She Said,” based on the book on the New York Times investigation into Harvey Weinstein’s sexual misconduct, made its premiere at the 2022 New York Film Festival on Oct. 13. In 2020, the former movie producer was convicted of rape in a New York trial. “She Said” recounts the 2017 New York Times investigation that exposed decades of sexual abuse by Weinstein. Zoe Kazan plays Times journalist Jodi Kantor and Carey Mulligan is investigative reporter Megan Twohey. Also in attendance at the premiere was Ashley Judd, who participated on the record for the Times’ exposé.
The movie is based on the 2019 book of the same name about the New York Times investigation into claims of sexual misconduct by Weinstein, then one of the most powerful producers in Hollywood. After the Times story broke, some 100 women came forward with accusations of sexual misconduct by Weinstein. The reporting fueled the #MeToo movement, with women around the world calling out sexual harassment. Weinstein, who has denied having non-consensual sex with anyone, was sentenced in New York in March 2020 to 23 years in prison for rape and sexual assault involving two women. Weinstein is currently on trial in California on additional charges of sexual misconduct.
